Research Areas Overview

There are considerable knowledge gaps in many areas in regard to moisture In buildings.  The following is a list of some of the possible research work that needs to be undertaken in certain themed areas and provides an overview of sorts. Some of these fall distinctly into one of the 5 Work Groups/Streams (of Buildings (B), Health (H), Use (U), Process (P) and Context (C), while others cross over several work group areas of interest.  Cross sector collaboration and integration is therefore essential.

Methodology (B and H)

  • Methods of assessment and analysis 
  • Monitoring methods, equipment and protocols
  • Modelling protocols, methods etc.
  • Definition of moisture risk and safety for occupants and fabric
  • Criteria for failure in materials
  • Understanding long term risks and uncertainties

Quantification and data (B primarily, but also H, U, P and C)

  • Material data
  • Weather data
  • Monitoring of existing buildings in different locations  
  • Specific targeted analysis of areas of vulnerability: ie timber frame in exposed areas, IWI onto trad buildings, flood area buildings
  • Frequency of moisture problems incl. the distribution of risk in terms of building types, age, location, building condition, air permeability, user types, construction skills
  • Costs and environmental impacts of moisture problems to UK each year
  • Possible effects of climate change

Systemic Effects (H, U, C, and B)

  • Moisture linkage to human health through IAQ, dust mites etc
  • Building use: how does human activity/ culture/ lifestyle affect moisture risk and comfort? Conversely how does damp or moisture comfort affect human activity/ culture/lifestyle?
  • Links of moisture to energy: in thermal resistance, comfort taking, heating to eliminate mould, and then in sickness, medicine, remediation etc etc
  • Links of moisture to financial issues: ie willingness to pay/ ability to pay for preventative measures, and consequential effects on environment
  • Hygroscopic buffering effects:  its impact and possible use.

Policy and engagement (C, P, U)

  • Policy, regulatory and standards assessments and methods: how to deal with uncertainty and complexity; how to drive learning into regulation and practice
  • Certification: how to deal with context variation, uncertainty and complexity.
  • Integrated decision-making with other values such as energy, cost, and heritage
  • How to engage with industry and government for the common good, enabling them to participate openly and without excessive fear of liability
  • Public awareness of the issues (both building performance and public health)
  • Training, CPDs and information days

Comparative studies and context (C)

  • Moisture risk and safety in other cultures/ countries. How problems have been addressed in different countries and with what success.
  • Examination of knowledge, skills, financial, cultural and other contexts which influence moisture risk and safety
